NIVA erbjuder avancerad, akademisk utbildning inom arbetsmiljöområdet i de nordiska länderna. Organisationen har fyra heltidsanställda och kontoret är beläget i Helsingfors. The development of the concept of biological monitoring has a long history with a substantial contribution from Europe.
In the EU and in the Nordic countries, regulations are more or less ubiquitous within the field of Occupational Health and Safety. Enforcement of such regulations is considered essential both by the ILO and the WHO in order to protect employee health.
