A gateway to knowledge, networking and real-life impact

In the ever-changing field of occupational health and safety, continuous learning and collaboration are key to addressing complex challenges. Therefore, NIVA offers a wide range of courses, where the goal is not only to present new research findings, but to exchange experiences with professionals in the Nordics and beyond.

A recent NIVA course on Retaining and Reintegrating Workers with Cancer held in May 2024 in Malmö, Sweden, exemplifies the importance of meeting colleagues and networking.

Sietske Tamminga, Assistant Professor at Amsterdam UMC and Michiel Greidanus, Postdoc researcher, Amsterdam UMC led the course in Malmö and highlights the importance in uniting researchers and healthcare professionals from across Europe.

With 14 participants from nine different countries and seven lecturers from four nations, the course offered a diverse range of perspectives and expertise. This multidisciplinary approach is crucial for developing effective strategies to support workers with cancer, as it covers practical and scientific topics such as patient journeys, stakeholder perspectives, intervention development, theoretical frameworks, and socioeconomic inequalities.

One of the course’s standout features was the group assignment, where participants collaborated in small teams to create interventions aimed at improving work participation for workers with cancer. This hands-on exercise not only fostered cross-cultural and professional collaboration but also allowed participants to apply their knowledge to real-world solutions.

A perfect blend of theoretical knowledge, practical application, and networking opportunities

For participants, the NIVA courses offer more than just educational content; they provide a platform for networking and professional growth. As one of the participants, Jessica Nordlander,  PhD student at Högskolan in Gävle reflected: “It was a great opportunity for me to meet other PhD students and researchers early in my doctoral studies. I am convinced that contacts and networks were created for future collaborations.” This sentiment underscores the value of face-to-face interactions in fostering meaningful relationships and collaborations that extend beyond the classroom.

“I am convinced that contacts and networks were created for future collaborations.”

NIVA’s project manager, Nathalie Räihä, emphasized the holistic experience that these courses provide, stating, “Learning is better together. This course in Malmö offered a wonderful blend of content, connections, and a touch of humor, making it truly memorable.” The inclusive and friendly environment cultivated by both participants and lecturers not only enhances learning, but also helps build lifelong professional networks.

Participating in NIVA courses is a valuable experience for professionals in the field of occupational health and safety. According to Nathalie, the goal is to create courses with a perfect blend of theoretical knowledge, practical application, and networking opportunities.
