Why do you think non-standard employment is an important issue to discuss in 2023?

Non-standard employment covers a range of different employment forms that are often associated with unfavourable aspects including job and income insecurity, vulnerability, lack of rights and temporary contracts as well as poor work environment, which in turn may affect workers’ health.

Some of these non-standard employments have an upward trend and thus knowledge is important for the future prevention of possible negative consequences hereof.

What would you like to say to the participants of the course?

This course aims to give you an introduction and knowledge of non-standard workers. The course is lectured by researchers coming from different scientific backgrounds, who will update you on the trends within research in non-standard employment.

You will obtain insights into many different aspects of non-standard employment e.g. who are non-standard workers? How are the work environment, health and safety risks related to non-standard employment? What is digital platform work and how is it regulated? And what are the relevant theoretical and methodological issues when doing research in this field?

The invited lectures are all involved in ongoing research within the field and cover different methods and perspectives on the topic. During the course, we aim to facilitate discussions and involve participants’ own projects. We are looking very much forward to welcoming you on the course!

What is your own background?

Anne Helene Garde is a professor in psychosocial work environment at the National Research Centre for the Working Environment in Copenhagen, Denmark.

Helena Breth Nielsen is a researcher in psychosocial work environment at the National Research Centre for the Working Environment in Copenhagen and has a PhD in Health and Medical Sciences.
