About this course

This course provides theoretical concepts, results from empirical research, and applied knowledge about how safety culture and safety behaviours at different levels can promote a safe and healthy work environment for military staff.

We will discuss which factors influence safety, how the knowledge can be applied in practice, and what may hinder the implementation of safety‑promoting factors. Real‑life cases will also be discussed with a focus on safe and healthy work environments in military settings.

Main topics

  • Theoretical concepts of safety culture, safety behaviours and occupational safety and health.
  • How different factors, such as leadership and resilience, contribute to safety in various military settings.
  • Interventions that promote safety and how to implement them.

Course objectives

By the end of the course, participants will understand the concepts of safety culture and safety behaviour. They will also gain knowledge about factors, interventions and methods that can enhance safety. This will equip them with the necessary skills  to promote a safe and healthy work environment in their research or practice.

Target group

  • Military staff and practitioners in the military field
  • Researchers, postdocs, PhD students, and research assistants in military and safety fields
  • Union representatives

Subject background

Given the current geopolitical tensions in our region, the safety culture and behaviours within military organizations have become paramount. Safety culture and safety behaviors are significant to the capability and credibility of preventing risks in military operations. The Swedish Work Environment Authority defines safety culture as the shared attitudes, perceptions, and values regarding safety and the work environment held by managers and employees. The closely related concept of safety climate represents a snapshot of the prevailing safety culture within an organization, reflecting the expectations, interpretations, and expressions of safety‑related attitudes. A robust safety culture, as manifested by a positive safety climate, provides the necessary conditions for developing safe behaviours. Ultimately, the goal is to prevent and reduce incidents and accidents and thereby promote occupational health and safety in the military force.

The course is relevant from a work environment perspective as it focuses on safety and risks. In the military force, highly hazardous risks are a part of the work and need to be continuously identified and mitigated to promote a safe and healthy work environment. Furthermore, a highly reliable military force with strong safety culture and safety behaviour is essential for the individual, the organization, and society—particularly in light of the current instability in our region. Stressing safety ensures that military forces can focus on their mission when needed while also protecting a sustainable economy and labour markets.
