Course objectives

  1. To provide the participants with theoretical and practical knowledge on push and stay factors for labour market participation among senior workers,
  2. To discuss how this knowledge can be used to prolong working life in different target groups (different sectors, long vs short education, seated vs physically demanding work).

Main topics

The course will cover push and stay factors for labour market participation across the following topics:

  • Psychosocial working environment
  • Physical work demands
  • Inclusion and diversity at workplaces
  • Flexibility (reduced working hours, flexible schedules etc)
  • Competencies and continuing education/training of skills
  • New technologies at the workplace
  • Selection, optimization and compensation strategies
  • Transition from work to retirement

Target groups

  • PhD students
  • Researchers
  • Occupational health professionals

Subject background

Due to demographic changes across Europe, often referred to as the ‘ageing society’, there are strong political interests in maintaining the labour force by prolonging working life, through decreasing early exit from work and increasing the actual retirement age. However, not everyone are willing to – or able to – work until a high age. Exit from work is a complex and dynamic process, involving different factors (e.g., push, pull, stay factors) at different levels (individual, workplace, society). This course will bring together researchers and practitioners working in the field of prolonging working life for senior workers and increase the participant’s knowledge on push and stay factors for labour market participation.
