Occupational Skin Diseases

About this course
Occupational skin diseases, particularly hand dermatitis, are common and often appear during the most active years of life. They can result in individual suffering, risk of impairment, and high costs for both the affected person and society.
This 3-day course offers a comprehensive update on diagnostics, epidemiology, and prevention of occupational skin diseases. With a particular focus on hand dermatitis, the programme combines clinical knowledge, scientific evidence, and practical approaches for improving workplace health and safety.
Course objectives
The course will provide participants with:
- An overview of occupational skin diseases with a focus on hand dermatitis.
- Updated knowledge of diagnostic methods, including patch testing and other relevant skin tests.
- Insights into epidemiology, risk factors, and occupational exposures.
- Practical strategies for treatment and prevention.
By the end of the course, participants will be better equipped to diagnose, manage, and prevent occupational skin diseases in the workplace.
Main topics
- Contact allergy and patch testing (baseline series and major occupational allergens)
- Epidemiology of occupational skin diseases
- Immunology of the skin
- Allergic and irritant contact dermatitis
- Other diagnostic tests
- Clinical subtypes of hand dermatitis
- Treatment and prevention
Target groups
This course is aimed at physicians (particularly dermatologists, but also other relevant specialties), as well as chemists, medical laboratory scientists, research nurses, and PhD students working in the field of occupational health and dermatology.
Subject background
Occupational skin diseases are common and multifactorial in origin. Hand dermatitis is particularly widespread in high-risk occupations, many of which employ a high proportion of women. Without proper diagnosis and management, the consequences can be long-lasting. However, many cases are preventable or manageable if addressed correctly. Strengthening expertise in this area is crucial to reducing personal suffering and enabling affected individuals to remain active in working life.
