About this course

Registry data is a valuable resource for epidemiological research on occupational health in the Nordic countries. These registries may contain detailed information related to work, health and demographics for the entire working population, greatly exceeding the size of survey data. A drawback of registry data is the lack of direct information on occupational exposure. Job Exposure Matrices (JEM) have the potential to be valuable tools for enhancing Nordic registry data with indirect exposure data, thus improving the applicability of registry data in occupational epidemiological research. JEM is also commonly used in combination with survey data on occupational histories to obtain histories of exposure.

Participants will learn how to use and evaluate job exposure matrices to support occupational health research. The course supports efforts to improve working conditions, reduce illness, and promote safe and healthy workplaces, contributing to sustainable labor markets and ensuring a good and safe work environment.

Course objectives

To provide the participants with up-to-date and in-depth knowledge on the validity of JEM, their relevance in occupational health research, and the comparability of JEM across countries, and thereby strengthening research cooperation across the Nordic countries.

Target groups

Researchers and students working in occupational health and safety.

Main topics

  • What is a JEM: benefits and limitations
  • Construction and validation of JEM
  • Cross-national applications of JEM
