About this course

Construction work is complex: every site is different, subcontractors often come from diverse backgrounds, and the workforce is increasingly international. These realities make improving safety a constant challenge. This course will help participants see what works in practice, what barriers exist, and how to move forward with concrete improvements. Case studies, group discussions, and expert input will connect research with worksite conditions.

The course also examines occupational safety as a core part of construction work, combining theory with lessons from recent research, accident investigations, and site inspections. It highlights how safety culture and safety climate shape daily work and how safety promotion can be strengthened in practice.

Main topics

This course will address:

  • Key theoretical concepts of safety culture, safety behaviours, and occupational safety, health, and wellbeing
  • How leadership, resilience, subcontractors, and vulnerable groups (youth, migrants) influence safety on construction sites
  • Interventions that promote safety, health, and well‑being, and how to apply them across companies of different sizes
  • The responsibilities of safety coordinators before and during construction

Course objectives

By the end of the course, participants will have a solid understanding of safety culture, safety behaviour, and safety in design within the construction industry. They will be able to relate recent research findings to practical site conditions and gain tools to strengthen safe and healthy working environments in their own organisations and projects.

Target group

Leaders and professionals in the construction industry with responsibility for or interest in occupational safety

Practitioners working on or with construction sites

Researchers, postdocs, PhD students, and research assistants in construction or occupational safety fields

Subject background

Recent fatal accidents in the construction industry have highlighted the urgent need to strengthen safety. The course directly responds to this need by offering knowledge that is both research‑based and practice‑oriented. Because safety perspectives often differ between contractors, subcontractors, and site workers, dialogue and shared understanding are essential. This course creates space for that exchange.

From a work environment perspective, construction is one of the most high‑risk industries. Identifying and controlling risks on complex worksites with multiple subcontractors is vital to protect workers’ health and safety. Topics such as safety in design, safety culture, and safety behaviours will be examined with this practical focus in mind.

Beyond protecting individuals, safe construction sites also strengthen the industry as a whole. Fewer accidents mean lower costs, less disruption, and a healthier workforce. Prioritising safety contributes to a more attractive and sustainable industry, reduces lost productivity, and supports stable labour markets and economic growth.
