Occupational Safety and Health – Regulation and Enforcement

28th – 29th of November 2023
Radisson Blu Plaza, Oslo, NO

About this course

Globally, unsafe working conditions, for example such as exposure to hazardous materials or adverse psychosocial working environments, have severe consequences for workers.

Both the ILO and the World Health Organisation views regulations and enforcement as essential to ensure occupational safety and health. Research in the field is still ongoing and the effectiveness of different forms of regulations and enforcement continues to be debated. What is the current state of the research on regulations and enforcement and how can it be developed further?

This course aims at providing up-to-date and evidence-based knowledge on regulation and enforcement of occupational safety and health.

Subject background

Globally, unsafe working conditions, for example such as exposure to hazardous materials or adverse psychosocial working environments, have severe consequences for workers. The International Labour Organisation estimates that 2.78 million people die each year as a result of occupational accidents or work-related disease. Additionally, there are an estimated 374 million non-fatal work-related injuries yearly.

The economic consequences are also severe with an estimated cost of 3.94% of global GDP each year. Occupational safety and health are therefore of paramount importance, primarily to prevent fatalities and ill-health in workers, but also to reduce financial losses due to lost productivity and increased burden on welfare systems.
