Occupational Regulatory Toxicology

About this course
Within occupational toxicology, regulatory toxicology focuses on the regulation of chemicals at the workplace. The field is advancing as new methods for measuring exposure, identifying hazards, and assessing risks are being developed, particularly through Next Generation Risk Assessment (NGRA) and the use of New Approach Methodologies (NAMs).
This course provides an overview of the current status of NGRA and innovative NAMs in occupational regulatory toxicology, as well as their use and readiness for regulatory decision-making.
The course will be organized by STAMI but lecturers from Denmark, Sweden, Finland and Norway will contribute in the course program.
Course objectives
This course will examine the status and application of NAMS in NGRA for risk assessment, and discuss the toxicological challenges of using NAMs to derive occupational exposure limit values.
Target groups
- Occupational physicians and occupational hygienists
- Occupational health and safety professionals working at workplaces
- Representatives of regulatory authorities, including labour authorities responsible for chemical safety
- Early-career researchers, PhD students, and scientists in the field of occupational toxicology
- Representatives of employers’ and employees’ organizations
Main topics
- Risk assessment (Hazard Identification, Exposure Assessment, Dose Response assessment, Risk Characterization)
- Next Generation Risk Assessment (NGRA) in occupational toxicology
- Use of New Approach Methodologies (NAMs) in toxicological risk assessment
Subject background
New mechanism-based approaches, such as NGRA and NAMs, can complement traditional risk assessment methodologies and potentially expand the number of chemicals that are assessed. However, NGRA and NAMS require profound scientific validation, regulatory acceptance and implementation. There are huge efforts to develop NAMS for toxicological assessment of occupational hazards with the ultimate goal of applying these NAMS in risk assessment and risk management. There has been some progress in this field but because of the variety of exposures at work places there is need for a variety of NAMS that may capture the real-world exposure scenarios, dose-response and suitable mechanisms of effect. The course will discuss the status of the current NAMS and their use in NGRA as a risk assessment tool.
