Micro- and Nanoplastics at Workplaces
– exposure assessment, biomonitoring and health hazards

About this course
Micro- and nanoplastics (MNPs) are a growing concern due to their potential impact on human health, but much remains unknown about exposure and associated health effects in occupational settings.
This two-day course provides an update on the latest scientific developments, with a particular focus on workplace exposure assessment, biomonitoring and potential health hazards.
The course is a follow-up to NIVA’s 2025 course on micro- and nanoplastics and will focus on recent developments in the field. Participants are welcome to join regardless of whether they attended the previous course.
Main Topics
- Exposure assessment, detection and quantification methods for MNPs
- Biomonitoring methods for MNPs
- Potential health effects
Course Objectives
The main objective of the course is to present updated strategies for workplace exposure assessment of micro- and nanoplastics and current knowledge about associated health effects.
The course will provide participants with updated knowledge on:
- exposure assessment of airborne micro- and nanoplastics, with a focus on tools and sampling strategies
- methods and analytical strategies for airborne MNPs
- biomonitoring methods for MNPs
- potential health hazards associated with exposure to MNPs
By bringing together recent scientific advances in these areas, the course aims to contribute to improved assessment of MNP exposure at workplaces and a better understanding of its potential health implications.
Target Group
The course is intended for researchers, PhD students, specialists and practitioners working with occupational exposure to micro- and nanoplastics or related topics, as well as policymakers with an interest in occupational health and emerging workplace exposures.
The course may be particularly relevant for those working with exposure assessment, biomonitoring, analytical methods and the potential health effects of MNPs in occupational settings.
Subject background
Micro- and nanoplastics are globally recognised as an environmental issue with potential negative impacts on human health. Microplastics are generally defined as plastic particles between 1 µm and 5 mm in size, while nanoplastics are smaller than 1 µm. They can be released through various anthropogenic activities and natural processes.
Scientific studies indicate that micro- and nanoplastics can enter the human body through inhalation and ingestion, cross biological barriers and accumulate in different organs. Studies have also suggested potential health risks, including inflammation and cellular damage, as well as risks associated with contaminants absorbed onto the plastic particles.
However, the extent of exposure to micro- and nanoplastics and its potential impact on human health, particularly in occupational settings, requires further investigation. Mapping workplace exposure and understanding the associated health implications are therefore important for preventing potential adverse health effects.
By bringing together recent scientific advances in exposure assessment, biomonitoring and health hazards, the course aims to contribute to improved assessment of micro- and nanoplastics at workplaces.
