Asbestos – past and present exposures
About this course
Occupational cancer related to asbestos is still a large cause of work-related deaths in Europe. This is caused by historic exposure to asbestos fibers, mainly from producing and using asbestos containing building materials. Today many buildings with asbestos containing materials need to be renovated. A new generation of workers are therefore at risk of asbestos exposure. Knowledge about where to find asbestos materials and safe handling is important to avoid that workers are exposed.
Reliable sampling and analytical methods are important for risk assessment and there is an ongoing discussion about analytical methods used to quantify asbestos. These topic remains relevant and will be covered in this course.

Many buildings across Europe contain asbestos containing materials and many of these will, in the coming years, be renovated or demolished. In many countries the occurrence of asbestos in buildings are not adequately mapped and there is a risk that workers in the construction industry are being exposed. Knowledge about where to find asbestos materials and safe handling is important to avoid that workers are exposed. Reliable sampling and analytical methods are important for risk assessment.
