The Nordic Council issues statement regarding Israel and Palestine

“Peace is one of the Nordic values, and there is a strong will among the Nordic countries and the Nordic Council to work towards peaceful solutions to conflicts. The Nordic countries have a good reputation and enjoy great trust in the world as brokers of peaceful solutions,” says Vice President Oddný G. Harðardóttir.

Peace and security in focus

In 2024, Iceland holds the presidency of the Nordic Council, the official body of intra-Nordic parliamentary co-operation. In its presidency programme, Iceland puts a strong emphasis on peace and security in the Arctic region, as well as internationally. Vice President Oddný G. Harðardóttir and the Social Democratic Group of the Nordic Council presented the statement to the Nordic Council’s decision-making body, the Presidium, which unanimously decided to support the statement during the Theme Session in Tórshavn on 8 April 2024.

The statement emphasises that the Nordic countries have long traditions of promoting and protecting international laws and agreements by supporting the work of international organisations, primarily under the auspices of the United Nations. Over the years, the Nordic countries have acted as international peace brokers, driven international agreements on peace and disarmament, and provided frameworks for significant peace negotiations.
