Subject background

Expert advice is an important mechanism to improve occupational health and safety. In most countries in Europe, and many countries outside Europe, there is some kind of legal obligation to involve experts in solving occupational health and safety problems. Research has shown that the quality of expert advice in general greatly varies and often does not result in effective problem reduction (Sutherland and Burgman Nature 2015). It has been suggested that better understanding the limitations of experts’ advice and making better use of experts can greatly improve the quality of experts’ advice. Asking better questions and making better use of research that can answer these questions will also help to overcome the limitations of experts’ advice.
