Applications of Toxicology in Occupational Health
Date
16 - 19 September 2013
Venue
Naantali Spa, Naantali, Finland
Objectives
Assessment of health risks of chemicals is one of the most challenging tasks for experts involved in chemical safety assessment in companies and in occupational health care. New challenges are arising from increasing amount of scientific information available requiring increasing amount of expertise to interpret it. In the same time, resources in many places are decreasing. The aim of the course is to give participants an overview of the toxicological principles and the understanding of toxicological mechanisms of chemicals relevant at workplaces and how to apply this information for risk analysis at workplaces and to strengthen their own skills for daily practice.
Main Topics
  • Toxicological principles: hazard identification, dose-response relationships and definitions and measures of risk
  • Exposure assessment and the use of biomonitoring in chemical risk assessment
  • Toxic reactions and their mechanisms with illustrating examples of the toxicology of selected substances
  • Use of toxicological information in the chemical health risk assessment and management
  • Values and ethical choices underlying toxicological and risk assessment decisions, concept of "acceptable risk"
  • Multiple exposures and combined effects of chemicals and chemical ad physical agents
  • Toxicology of ultrafine and nanoparticles
  • Toxicology behind the occupational exposure limit values and e.g. REACH DNELs
  • Chemical safety assessment under REACH and its implications on chemical risk management at workplaces
  • Sources providing information on the hazardous properties of chemicals
  • Risk perception and communication, specific issues like multiple chemical sensitivity
